Mom's Ambrosia Fruit Salad

1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed (or use freshly whipped cream)
1 (8 ounce) can fruit cocktail (I use the tropical with no grapes), drained
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
1 apple, chopped
1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges, drained
3 cups miniature marshmallows
1 (10 ounce) jar maraschino cherries, drained (save a few to decorate on top of salad)
optional ingredients: 1/8 cup Grand Marnier, 1/2 cup coconut, chopped pecans

1. Mix all ingredients together and chill for at least 1 hour. Serve with a few halved cherries on top in a circular pattern.
